When it comes to tying the knot in Cornwall, more couples are choosing wedding ceremonies created by independent celebrants for the bespoke and personal touch they bring. It’s not just couples who appreciate this approach; many suppliers, from photographers and florists to makeup artists and venues, agree that ceremonies led by independent celebrants are more personal and enjoyable than those conducted by registrars. In fact, recently we've created and delivered ceremonies for suppliers in all of these categories - so they are speaking from experience!

However, a recent blog from a local venue, written in conjunction with the registration service, claims: "We believe your wedding day should be as unique as your love story – and now, thanks to the new personalised ceremony service from the registration service, you can enjoy a legal ceremony that’s completely bespoke."
The truth about "completely bespoke"
We've said it before, and we'll say it again: this claim is misleading. The term "completely bespoke" means much more than just adding personal vows or incorporating rituals like sand blending or ring warming into a legal wedding ceremony. As someone who has worked as both an independent celebrant AND a legal registrar, I know the difference inside out!
A personalised ceremony is about crafting an entire event that truly reflects a couple's unique story and love. It's an event that goes beyond standard templates and becomes a bespoke experience, reflecting the individuality of the couple. The journey begins with the celebrant investing time in getting to know the couple. This involves regular communication through chats, emails, video calls, and in-person meetings. Each interaction is an opportunity to learn about the couple's personalities, values, and shared experiences.
Independent celebrants believe that it's essential for the couple to feel comfortable and supported throughout the process. The celebrant fosters a trusting relationship where the couple can freely share their most special memories and thoughts. This open dialogue is key to crafting a ceremony that genuinely represents them. The process is collaborative and encourages creativity to ensure that all elements of the ceremony reflect the couple's unique journey.
A personalised ceremony is not a last-minute checklist completed a month before the event. It is a carefully crafted experience that evolves from ongoing interactions and deep understanding. Each element is thoughtfully chosen to reflect the couple's love story and combines to create a unique reflection of the couple's identity and journey together. It's an event that resonates with authenticity and celebrates their love in a way that is truly their own.
Personalised vows and symbolic rituals
With a registrar, yes, you can read your own personalised vows after your legal vows, provided they aren't religious or "inappropriate". But does the registrar offer detailed guidance on crafting these vows? Do they provide inspiration and experience, make suggestions, help edit your words, or even write the vows in full if you're struggling? Will they format and print them beautifully? Of course, they won’t.
Consider the "fisherman's knot" tying which is now offered as a ritual. This is the council's version of a handfasting. Councils used to perform handfastings until very recently when independent celebrants pointed out that this was a ritual steeped in pagan tradition, which councils can't permit due to their non-religious stance. So, they renamed it! It’s amusing, really.
And from the blog - "And because your wedding ceremony is both legal and bespoke, there’s no need for multiple ceremonies—just one perfect, personal celebration."
You know, we absolutely agree. Do your paperwork at the local council office and have your fully personalised ceremony with an independent celebrant.
Why choose a ceremony with an independent celebrant?

Unlike traditional ceremonies, a celebrant-led wedding is tailored to your beliefs, values, and story. You have the freedom to choose the setting and style, and incorporate unique rituals or cultural elements significant to you. This personalisation ensures your wedding is as unique as your love.
